Carnival Of Small Business Issues - Edition 29

Welcome to the 29th edition of CoSBI.

Us Atlantic Canadians have been spoilt over the last couple of years. We do not expect expect snow in December anymore, let alone a snow storm. But we have had some really good snow even as early as November. Who knows, we may actually have a white Christmas this year, after all. One of the more well known recent studies was conduced by Petter Lundborg of the Free University Amsterdam. His study of more than 14,000 workers found that nonsmokers took an average of 25 sick leave days per year while their smoking colleagues who took 36 sick days annually. According to Healthfinder.gov, a similar study by Terry Conway of San Diego State University found “was very clearly a prospective reduction in performance related to smoking.” Of the 5,500 women in the US Navy surveyed, 27 percent were much less likely to serve their full eight year term than the 45 percent who never smoked or the 28 percent who smoked only occasionally. Only 45.5 percent of smokers did complete their service term.”
